Crime in CLT: Violent Offenses Down, But Some Property Crimes Spike

Charlotte is seeing signs of progress in public safety, with overall crime dropping 8% in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period last year, according to new data from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Violent crime saw notable declines, including a 29% drop in homicides and a 25% reduction in aggravated assaults. From January through June, reported violent crimes fell from 3,688 in 2024 to 2,760 in 2025, showing encouraging momentum in CMPD’s crime prevention efforts.

Despite the downward trend overall, some areas of concern remain. Commercial burglaries rose sharply—from 1,144 to 1,557—marking a 36% increase. Larcenies from vehicles also climbed, with 5,062 incidents reported, up from 4,931 last year. While residential burglaries, vehicle thefts, and arsons all saw declines, police say they remain focused on targeted strategies to address these upticks in property-related crimes moving into the second half of the year.
