Big Price, Big Change? Meck Co to Vote on Sales Tax Hike

This November, residents of Mecklenburg County, NC, will vote on a proposed 1% sales tax increase that would raise the county’s rate from 7.25% to 8.25%. The measure—enabled by the recently passed PAVE Act and approved for the ballot by county commissioners—aims to fund sweeping improvements in public transportation. If approved, the average household could pay around $240 more per year in sales taxes.

Over the next 30 years, the tax is projected to generate about $19.4 billion. These funds would be split between major transportation categories: 40% for roads, 40% for rail expansion (like light rail), and 20% for bus system enhancements.
