Suge Knight

Suge Knight was one of the most feared men in America once upon a time in the 90s, but his legal team and fiancée want the world to know that he is not the monster portrayed in the media.

In an exclusive interview with the Associated Press, Knight’s new legal team (J. Tooson and Jeremy Lessem) and his fiancée Toi-Lin Kelly offered a preview of their defense of the former mogul, including a detailed account of the time leading up to a violent confrontation that ended when Knight ran over two men, killing one, outside a Compton burger stand in January 2015.

The trio is attempting to sell Knight as a sensitive victim in all of the incidents for which he’s been charged. Knight, a two-time convicted felon, faces up to life in prison if found guilty in the murder case, but Tooson and Lessem say he was fleeing an ambush and didn’t realize until later that he had run over and killed Terry Carter, a Compton businessman who was attempting to resolve a dispute between Knight and the makers of Straight Outta Compton.

After the attorneys claimed that Knight was expecting to have a meeting with Carter about receiving payment for the use of his likeness in the N.W.A biopic, Toi-Lin said Knight had no idea there would be trouble, and planned to join her and their son at an arcade restaurant to play video games after the meeting.

Toi-Lin said, “I think people have this perception of him that he’s this monster that wakes up every morning looking for trouble. That’s exactly who he isn’t. I think his nickname, Sugar Bear … describes him perfectly. I’m now raising our son and trying to explain to him that, you know, ‘Daddy didn’t do anything wrong. It’s hard because I’d like to know that my son has belief in the justice system and how it works.”

Despite being behind bars, Suge’s name is still making headlines. Earlier this week, the former rap mogul sued Chris Brown and the owners of 1OAK after he was shot seven times at a 2014 party hosted by the R&B singer.
