In the week following the police shooting of Keith Lamont Scott, protests and riots went on for several days in Charlotte and the city implemented a curfew.  On Sept. 25, an email was sent to an Elizabeth community group for families that expressed the perceived negative impact the curfew was having on businesses. Mayor Jennifer Roberts subsequently forwarded the email to CMPD Chief Kerr Putney and Interim City Manager Ron Kimble from her personal email account, saying “I think we should lift the curfew today. Let’s discuss.”  The curfew was lifted that same day.

Though this is not illegal to use personal email for city business, with recent issues with questionable use of personal email at the federal level, this has been made an issue of. It remains to be seen how far the inquiry will go, but it sounds like government officials on all levels need to streamline their email communication guidelines
