If Ang Lee is the Kanye West of film, Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk is his Yeezus.

Just like ‘Ye, Ang has a resume featuring great creative work, including movies Life Of Pi, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and more. However, much like Kanye’s Yeezus album, Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk has faced a lot of criticism.

Shot in 4K resolution at 120 frames per second––which is five times faster than the average movie––it’s also in 3D, which is almost never used for a drama. This technique really puts you inside the movie, but critics haven’t had the best things to say about the actual plot.

Regardless of the naysayers, Ang Lee is never afraid to try something new. Sometimes he hits, other times he might miss. There is no doubt that Lee’s technique for this film is polarizing. As Jay Z said about Yeezus, “That’s what great art is, it’s polarizing. It forces you to have an opinion.”

I asked Lee about his inspiration when it comes to filmmaking and he suggested it’s fear that motivates him: “I am scared, but that doesn’t stop me from doing it. Fear forces you to do your best,” he said.
