A historic Black park in south Charlotte, just outside uptown gets an update.

Pearl Street Park located at 1200 Baxter St. was once known as Charlotte’s “Negro park.” It opened in the 1940s.

But this week, Mecklenburg County officially reopened the renovated park. The 11 acres of the park served as a cultural hub for much of Black Charlotte.

Now the park includes basketball courts, a playground, fitness equipment, a performance pavilion and a lighted field.
