Coco Jones Interview cover

Acting, dancing, and singing might be hard for some to do all three, yet, Coco Jones makes it looks so easy.

Eric Kelley II and Kiara J. caught up with Coco to talk about her new single Caliber, her role as the iconic Hilary Banks on the Peacock series ‘Bel Air‘ and what type of men are her caliber.

CoCo announced that she was nominated for Best Actress for this year’s BET Awards. Coco is a fan favorite on the dramatized reboot of the beloved sitcom, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

She talked about some similarities that her character and the old Hilary Banks shared.

“We’re both determined. Whatever we see for ourselves is what it has to be and any opinions that contradict that are irrelevant,” Coco said.  “We’re also both bougie but I’m working on myself with that.”

She spoke more about her getting the call for Bel-Air and being cast as Hilary Banks. She said her family is a huge support system for her going through her career.

“So I remember as soon as I heard that, I got it. Like, I was like, halfway on the couch halfway on the floor. Because you know, when you’re on them nervous ass calls, you just be like, What am I doing? And I’m saying so they told me that I got it. I remember I fully rolled onto the floor, you know, stop drop and roll style. And then I called my family and I immediately told them because as an actor if you don’t have that support, like good luck, because it’s so it looks so scary sometimes, you know and my family they’ve been there for every no so a yes for me is literally a yes for us.”

The 24-year-old is not only been acting since a young, singing was her first love.

Coco released her debut song signed to Def Jams, ‘Caliber’ in March 2022. She explained the vibe behind the song.

“I really want you to listen to the lyrics because you are speaking highly of yourself by saying, “can you get on my caliber?” You know what I’m saying? Like it kind of makes you look at yourself like, Well, who am I you know? Because for you to be asking that, who are you?”

Coco went on to let us know what a man of Coco’s caliber looks like.

“I feel like character is so important. Like, the superficial the status those things come and go. I know that, okay. I’ve learned that. But like, how you treat people, how you think of yourself? Like, are you working on yourself? Are you going to come here and bring trauma or have you been to therapy at all? You know, do you express your emotions healthy? Or are we giving toxic is it giving you are you gonna like go straight when you’re upset? Or can you communicate? You know, I’m saying because I don’t need I don’t need any relationship that don’t bring me peace. Because that’s what everyone’s striving for. So can you bring peace?”

Putting Coco on the spot, we dropped a few celebrity’s names to see if they were on her Caliber, or Nah: Drake, Tristan Thompson, Jack Harlow, Tyler Lepley and Kodak Black. You’ll have to watch the interview to see Coco’s response.

At the moment, Tik Tok and other social media platforms play a huge part in the music industry. Artist like JoJo and Halsey have spoken out against it their label claiming they were told they can’t release music until they have a viral video. Coco discussed what conversations her and her label have pertaining to social media releasing music.

I’m really grateful for my situation because I had a very similar, like, rough deal, like Jojo. Not exactly in the sense that they wouldn’t release music, just creatively. It was just butting heads, butting heads, butting heads, you know,” Coco said.

“And so when that’s happening, you can’t put stuff out because nobody agrees, you know, yeah. That was when I was younger, though. So I got to like, get out of it. And then kind of start from scratch before I signed my new deal.”

Before we let CoCo go, we had to catch her off guard one more time. We asked her which artist should love to collab with.

She said she would really want to work with Beyonce because she’s always wanted to study her greatness. And lastly would love to work with Lucky Daye. She concluded the interview covering Lucky Daye’s song ‘Over’.
