College Sports

The start of the college football season is getting closer, with conference media days already underway. Locally Clemson will garner most of the national hype, as they look to end their College Football Playoff absence. South Carolina will also get a lot of publicity after the way they finished last season, upsetting top-ten teams in Clemson and Tennessee. Another local program that is going to receive some hype, with be North Carolina, even after they lost their final four games last season, to finish 9-5, after a 9-5. The main reason for the hype is because of quarterback Drake Maye, who is a Heisman hopeful, and a top NFL Draft prospect for 2024. But Carolina will need more production from the guys around him, as last year was a clear example, one guy can't carry you to a conference title.

When Charlotte decided to move from Will Healy last year, it was a necessary change for a program, that had relatively underachieved during his tenure, after his first season on campus. With the Charlotte program set to transition to the American Conference this year, the program had to identify the right coach, to help elevate the program to one that could contend in a tougher conference. They identified, Biff Poggi from Michigan, where he served as the associate head football coach to Jim Harbaugh, and was credited for helping get the Wolverines to back-to-back College Football Playoff appearances. Poggi made his name in the football world at the high school level, coaching for twenty years at the Gilman School, and at Saint Frances Academy, a powerhouse in the high school ranks. His coaching stint followed a successful career on Wall Street, where Poggi made himself a millionaire.

After five seasons, Ron Sanchez officially stepped down as the head basketball coach at Charlotte. Sanchez resigned so that he could return to Tony Bennett's bench at Virginia. Sanchez was 72-78 during his tenure with the program but failed to make the NCAA Tournament. This news broke during the Wes & Walker Show on WFNZ, and it allowed two guys that care about Charlotte basketball to give their thoughts.
