The 2023 college football season is upon us, with multiple conferences having already conducted their media days, and others hosting theirs this week, including the AAC. Earlier this month, Charlotte officially joined the American conference, as they set to take the next step as an athletic department. Another move made by Charlotte this off-season, was to hire Biff Poggi, who served as the assistant head coach at Michigan and was credited for helping return the Wolverines to among the nation’s elite. The hiring of Poggi was unique in many ways, as he’s a former high school coach, in addition to being a self-made millionaire, making a living on Wall Street. It didn’t take long for Poggi to make his presence felt, stating boldly that the 49ers would be among the top 15 defenses in all of college football, and making it known that he was not happy with the current financial state of the program.

If you thought Poggi was going to be more buttoned up today, as he addressed the media at AAC Media Days, you thought wrong. Poggi stated boldly that this isn’t your average team making the jump from Conference-USA, and that his program is ready to compete in 2023. But he didn’t stop there. After a relatively short media session, where Poggi was asked only three questions, he said ““That’s it? Three questions?” “Maybe that’s because you have us ranked last, that’s all what you think of us.” As he left the podium, Poggi slapped it, just to show how frustrated he was for the lack of interest in his program.

Charlotte was picked to finish last in their division of the American Conference, so it does make sense as to why there was little interest in his program. Poggi is very confident in what his program will be able to accomplish, and with an astonishing 52 transfers being brought in over the off-season, you can tell there’s a sense of urgency with the new staff. With the comments the first time head coach has made over the last several months, you could make the argument that Poggi has only added pressure to deliver on the field, to get the money he wants and needs to build the program he envisioned upon taking the job. Luckily for him, he doesn’t lack the confidence to deliver on the promises he’s made both publicly and privately.
