Azealia Banks is finally coming clean about her choice to undergo skin bleaching procedures.

Fans first began commenting on Banks’s noticeably lighter skin when she released the cover of her recent Slay-Z mixtape. Her Instagram comments became riddled with questions about her changing appearance and whether or not she bleached her skin, to the point where it became an unavoidable topic.

In an Instagram video confession, the Harlem rapper set the record straight:

“What is the difference between getting a nose job and changing your skin color? What’s the difference between wearing hair weave and changing your skin color? Nobody was upset when I was wearing 30-inch weaves and tearing out my edges and doing all types sh*t like that. You guys loved it, but what is the difference? I don’t understand what the difference is…because there really isn’t a difference. And I think that for so many people to say ‘oh you wanting to lighten your skin’…to say that it negates anything I’ve said about the current situation of Blackness in America is ignorant and just stupid. What do body modifications have to do with somebody’s level of intellect? The two don’t correlate. I think it’s petty.”

Banks’s perspective on the issue is quite interesting, given how quick she’s been to call out other celebs for cultural appropriation, having unauthentic Black pride and pandering to white audiences (Beyonce, Kendrick Lamar and her arch nemesis Iggy Azalea were all victims of her recent twitter tirades.) Twitter of course couldn’t resist the opportunity to call out the Harlem rapper for her hypocrisy:

This is not the only time we’ve seen Banks’s issue with colorism manifest itself. A couple of weeks back, Banks’s sarcastically responded to a fan about her perception as a “villainous evil black b–ch,” saying “Maybe I should bleach my skin? Then maybe I’ll start getting a bit more respect in hip-hop then …..(sic).” Apparently, she was far from joking.

Do you think folks are overreacting to Banks’s skin bleaching, or is she being a hypocrite? Sound off in the comments below.
