Hornets President of Basketball Operations and GM Mitch Kupchak took time away from his busy schedule to join Kyle Bailey on Thursday’s edition of the Clubhouse as he discussed the outlook for the Hornets in this month’s Draft and Free Agency after making it to the Play-In Tournament this past year.

The first big topic broached by Mitch was this month’s draft and what his outlook is for the Hornets who own the 11th pick as he told Kyle that they are still not good enough to be picking for need and still have to draft for BPA (Best Player Available). Mitch did state that he agrees with many experts in this draft that it is deep in-depth and they should be able to get a very good player at pick 11.

Kyle then asked Mitch if he would be willing to trade the 11th pick for more picks or an established NBA player and Mitch responded by saying:

“Yes, of course, but we have to be careful and understand where we are as a team. We are ahead of schedule but we are not deep enough in depth so we have to add to our talent pool.”

Mitch also looked at the free agency period from a very cautious approach as he told Kyle that he didn’t want to stack the team with too many veterans for a team that will just be fighting for a playoff spot. Mitch also told Kyle they are still evaluating all the free agents on their roster and see how many they can retain.

The interview ended with Kyle asking Mitch about what the expectations of the Hornets team should be entering the 2021-22 season as Mitch said the expectation should be to compete for a playoff spot as Mitch pointed out again that this team is still ahead of schedule.
