The actress, who took a small, non-speaking role as a slave who is raped in the film, sat down with Harper’s Bazaar and expressed her sorrow about what ultimately happened with the movie and the people involved in it.
Union was particularly perturbed that the performance of Aja Naomi King, who played Nat Turner’s wife Cherry, was ultimately overlooked. She told the mag, “It’s like we all got thrown out. It’s like the baby and the bathwater all went down the drain. This could have been [Aja’s] big break. This big job that gives her the accolades and attention that she deserves.”
The film, which chronicled the slave uprising led by Nat Turner, underperformed at the box office, seemingly thanks to the negative press surrounding Nate Parker and the rape allegations levied against him.
The Almost Christmas star also spoke about being a Black woman in the entertainment industry and addressing the “sense of being hyper-visible or invisible on sets.” She said that it’s exhausting to have to constantly point out racial microaggressions while also working full-time.
“When do you stand up and point out every microaggression, and when do you stand down so you’re not the angry black person all the time?” asked Union. “It’s tiring. It feels like another job that you’re not getting paid for — that is all-encompassing.”
Mrs. Wade is dropping gems. Check out what else she had to say in her full interview with Harper’s Bazaar.
