Whiteness History Month is actually a thing, at least at a college in Portland, Ore.
Portland Community College will take the month of April to examine what it means to be White. Contrary to what many may think, Whiteness History Month may actually be beneficial to society. Instead of a celebration of contributions to history, organizers hope it will “inspire innovative and practical solutions to community issues and social problems that stem from racism.”
The school’s site explains it perfectly:
“Whiteness History Month Project, unlike heritage months, is not a celebratory endeavor, it is an effort to change our campus climate. The Project seeks to challenge the master narrative of race and racism through an exploration of the social construction of whiteness. Challenging the master narrative of traditional curriculum is a strategy within higher education that promotes multicultural education and equity.”
The project even goes as far as to say, “Whiteness originates racism. It is relational.”
Organizers hope Whiteness History Month will improve the climate on campus, promote community partnerships, and reflect how one’s personal beliefs impact others.
